It was my first time coaching this team and the girls were all super helpful. The game started with Pass and Play having most possession but our defence kept hustling and ended up getting quite a few important interceptions which allowed Panthers to catch back up. We had a team of 8 so changed around the combinations throughout the game, especially in the shooting circle. All the combinations worked well as each player bought their own strength to the position. It was a more physical game than expected and the girls rose to the challenge. After a few tweaks, the holding in the D was solid and the passes in were consistent.
I was most impressed by the defence down the court, all 7 players were marking their players full out on every ball and in result there was quite a few three second calls or forced errors which is always good to see. I think every single member of the team got at least one interception which is great!
Going forward, working on driving towards the ball and not standing in place waiting for it to reach them will help stop balls being turned over and allow the ball to get to goal. Also, watching our spacing and understanding when to offer for the ball and when to let the others bring it down will help with that.
Overall, the girls played full out for the whole game and only lost in the last 3 minutes where Pass and Play managed to get their rhythm going. The girls were lovely to coach and can definitely win it next time.
