Tigers faced Sky B, who currently sit top of the Division 2 table. In their previous meeting, Sky B won convincingly 69–35, a 34-goal margin. This time, however, Tigers delivered a much stronger performance, halving that difference and finishing with a 57–40 scoreline.
It was the second quarter that negatively impacted the score for us. Tigers had started strongly, winning the first quarter 16–15 — an amazing start. However, Sky B dominated the second quarter and we struggled to get the ball down to our shooters, losing the quarter 18–6. The second half was far more competitive, with Tigers losing the third quarter 11–7 and the fourth 13–11, showing how much closer the result could have been.
There was a lot of positive play throughout the match. The ball flowed well into our attacking circle, where our shooters worked hard against strong defensive pressure. At the other end, our defence had to deal with well-drilled attacking play from Sky B and extremely accurate shooters who rarely missed.
Early in the match it was a little too easy for Sky B to take the ball to goal from their centre pass, but as the game progressed the girls stepped up well to their players. They began delaying play, anticipating the flow of the game and forcing Sky B to work much harder to earn their goals.
As always, there were some lovely passages of play and valuable learning moments. Our attacking flow was particularly strong, with good drives to the circle edge and some excellent feeds into the shooting circle. Defensively, the girls read the game well and were available when needed for a reset. Pressure inside the circle improved as the match went on, with players moving their feet more, challenging both player and ball, and gaining several important tips. One key takeaway from the match is to continue reducing unforced errors.
It was great to see how much these girls have developed over the season. I hadn’t seen them in competitive match play for a few weeks, and there has definitely been clear improvement — well done to everyone.
Congratulations to Chloe S and Amelia for CPOM, and to Martha and Amelia for OPOM.
Chloe S was dominant at both ends of the court, switching to GK for the third quarter. As GS she held her space well, made timely moves to receive the ball and shot confidently. When she moved to GK, she applied strong pressure on Sky B’s accurate GS, causing hesitation for those feeding the ball into the circle.
Amelia’s movement at GA was excellent, and her shooting statistics reflected a strong performance. She worked incredibly hard both in attack and defence — so much so that coach had to remind her to hold back and recover at times.
Finally, Martha was a steady and reliable force in defence. She worked hard to keep her opponent away from the circle edge, helped transition the ball down court, and was always available as back-up when needed.
Overall, this was a much-improved performance from Tigers and a clear demonstration of the team’s progress over the season. Again, well done to all.
